The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Episode 2 – Can Penny prove that it’s easy to gain followers or will the power go to her head?
Episode 2 of The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder starts with Penny and her friends leaving school. Her friends want to go to a meet and greet a famous makeup star was having at the mall. He is called Makeup Boy. He has millions of followers on social media. Penny thinks it’s stupid they are wasting all their money on this guy’s merch just because he tells them to. That anyone can be like him if they wanted. Her friends laugh her off and go to the signing anyway. Later, she gets called down to clean Suga Mama’s dentures. She ends up recording the comedic process, posting it online.
The next day, she wakes up to a ton of likes and followers. She even gets sent merchandise…liking all this attention, she starts posting more on her everyday life. Getting more sponsorships to sell to her audience. Even making a lot of money from it. Which stops her dad from putting a stop to it after seeing how many zeros are on the check. She then goes to the mall with her friends only to run into Makeup Boy. He insults her makeup, calling her lame because she doesn’t have as many followers as he does. As revenge, she goes online to tell all of her followers that Makeup Boy is canceled. This ends up ruining his career.
The power is getting to Penny’s head and her friends are starting to notice. LaCienega tries to tell her she can’t boss them around just because she’s famous. Penny ends up getting her canceled as well, making her a social pariah. She ends up canceling stores, friends, products, and even her grandma. She gets her grandma sent to a fitness camp by telling her followers that she needs to lose weight to her dad’s joy. Sick of this, Maya makes a plan to get Penny canceled so she can see the error of her ways. She ends up using a drone to spy on her dad. Her dad has been taking bribes from Wizard Kelly so Penny wouldn’t cancel any of his stores. Penny’s followers see how they are being used so they all unfollow her.
She ends up realizing that she hurt a lot of people she cares about. She makes amends, apologizing to the people she hurt. She even runs into Makeup Boy who is trying to save beagles at a local shelter. She realizes there is more to him than she thought. Her Suga Mama comes back from boot camp super buff, wanting to punish her son for letting her get taken away to a boot camp. The dog also comes back muscular. She ends up beating him up in a really funny scene. Penny apologizes to her but Sugar Mama quickly forgives her, saying this is the best shape she has ever been in. Penny learned a valuable lesson about social media.
I really liked this episode. I think it gives a good social commentary on teens/adults using social media today. How obsessed we can become with likes and popularity. So much so that gaining followers can become our only focus. How we spend money on products just because a popular person on TikTok or Instagram is endorsing them. Even if the cost is outrageous. It’s a very relatable message. The jokes were also really funny. There are some adult jokes that will go over kids’ heads but adults will enjoy. Another great episode that I had a fun time watching!
