The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder Episode 1- Can Penny Proud navigate through puberty and get the new girl to like her?
The Proud Family is back and better than ever! It’s been 17 years since the show has been canceled but now it’s here! The family and friends are just as funny as before. I think it’s really cool that they brought most of the old cast back. Tommy Davidson, who plays Oscar Proud, was the standout of this episode because almost every line of his made me laugh. The newer additions also do a great job in the show as well! This series has an updated animated style that fits this show perfectly. The new theme song sung by Joyce Wrice is done beautifully, keeping the heart of the original one.
The episode starts off with Penny Proud hitting puberty and starting her first day of high school. Trudy, Penny’s mom, has new career highs, Oscar, Penny’s dad, has wild dreams, and Penny faces new challenges. Her dad, Oscar Proud see’s his daughter’s sudden change and tries to do everything in his power to stop his daughter from becoming a young woman. Even going as far as putting her in a suit of armor to cover all of her up. He’s stopped by his mother, Suga Mama who tells him to let her grow up to become who she wants to be. Penny manages to escape and meets her friends returning from the old series. Michael, Dijonay, Zoey, and LaCienega. New kids Maya and KG are also introduced, having just moved to Smithville.
Penny sees that Maya does not like her so she makes it her mission to do everything in her power to befriend the girl. Stalking her all over the school to get in her favor. After school, her dad takes her to the salvation army to get her uniforms that will cover more of her. Much to Penny’s disbelief, He ends up buying her a bunch of military uniforms. The next day she finally gets frustrated with Maya and asks her why she dislikes her.
Maya tells her because she met girls like her who are superficial at her other schools. That girls like her only care about themselves. Penny denies this. Maya tells her to prove it. That she is going to save the panda protest at the zoo. Penny can choose to go to the school dance or help her save the Panda to prove that she’s not who Maya thinks she is.
She tells her dad she is going to the dance in the uniform he bought her but changes in the front yard. She ends up going to meet Maya at the zoo, only to find out Maya wants to illegally break out the animal. She decides that gaining Maya’s friendship isn’t worth breaking the law and going against her values. She heads back to the dance. Her dad ends up showing up as well after finding the discarded uniform on the lawn. He is at first angry but after a talk with Penny, admits that he does have to let her grow up to become her own woman. The episode ends with a nice father-daughter moment.
Overall, this was a great first episode of the series. I had a lot of laughs and it was fun seeing these old characters again in their new stage of life. Just be prepared to not expect any realism for some of these jokes. This show has a talking panda that cracked me up. This show is also great for newer viewers as well. I’m glad Bruce W. Smith and Ralph Farquhar, who lead the old series, are in charge of this. I don’t think this show would be as great without them. I recommend anyone who is a fan of the old series or someone just wanting a funny new show to watch to check this series out!
