Batwoman Season 2 Find Its New Lead in Javicia Leslie. The actress has been cast as Ryan Wilder who will now take on the mantle of Batwoman
The news has come sooner than we have expected but The CW has found their new lead for the second season of Batwoman in Javicia Leslie. The actress has been cast as Ryan Wilder who will now take on the mantle of Batwoman in the new season.
Nearly two months ago news broke that Batwoman lead Ruby Rose was exiting the role of Kate Kane/Batwoman. Rose’s exit came with the revelation that the actress didn’t acclimate well to the hefty workload of being a series lead, and didn’t acclimate well to life in Vancouver where The CW films its Arrowverse shows. Shortly after it was revealed that Rose’s exit was a mutual decision between the actress and the creatives behind the series including The CW.
A month ago it was revealed that The CW was looking to bring in a new actress to take up the mantle of Batwoman instead of recasting the role of Kate Kane as many outlets initially reported. While many believed that Kate Kane would be killed off in order to bring in the new character who is still currently under the name of Ryan Wilder, those reports were shutdown and debunked by Batwoman series creator Caroline Dries.
Javicia Leslie who will now be the first person of color to ever take on the mantle of Batwoman expressed her excitement for her new role:
“I am extremely proud to be the first Black actress to play the iconic role of Batwoman on television, and as a bisexual woman, I am honored to join this groundbreaking show which has been such a trailblazer for the LGBTQ+ community,”
Ryan Wilder is described as likable, messy, a little goofy and untamed. She’s also nothing like Kate Kane (previously played by Ruby Rose), the woman who wore the Batsuit before her. With no one in her life to keep her on track, Ryan spent years as a drug-runner, dodging the GCPD and masking her pain with bad habits. Today Ryan lives in her van with her plant. A girl who would steal milk for an alley cat and could also kill you with her bare hands, Ryan is the most dangerous type of fighter: highly skilled and wildly undisciplined. She is an out lesbian, athletic, raw, passionate, fallible, and very much not your stereotypical All-American hero.
Leslie’s credits also include “God Friended Me”, “The Family Business” and the film “Always a Bridesmaid.”
