The Suicide Squad: Who Lives and Who Dies? [SPOILERS]

**THIS ARTICLE CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS FOR JAMES GUNN’S “THE SUICIDE SQUAD”**

It goes without saying that James Gunn’s “The Suicide Squad” is hands-down one of the best comic book films in recent years. After his firing from Marvel Studios, Warner Bros. quickly got their hands on James Gunn and offered him a multitude of characters to work with within the live-action medium, Superman included. Sticking with what he does best, ensemble films, James Gunn decided to tackle a soft-reboot follow-up to David Ayer’s “Suicide Squad” featuring some of the first installment’s returning cast members like Margot Robbie (Harley Quinn), Jai Courtney (Captain Boomerang), Viola Davis (Amanda Waller), and Joel Kinnaman (Rick Flag).

In turn, Gunn also introduced the likes of Starro, Weasel played by Sean Gunn, T.D.K. (The Detachable Kid) played by Nathan Fillion, Javelin playing by Flula Borg, Peacemaker played by WWE Superstar John Cena, Blackguard played by Pete Davidson, Savant played by Michael Rooker, Ratcatcher 2 played by Daniela Melchoir, Polka-Dot Man played by David Dastmalchian, King Shark played by Steve Agee and voiced by Sylvester Stallone, Mongal played by Mayling Ng, The Thinker played by Peter Capaldi, and Bloodsport played Idris Elba.

Pictures’ action adventure “THE SUICIDE SQUAD,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Given the name of the film we were all watching, we knew that getting attached to certain characters would be a big no-no. Whether they were KIA (killed in action) or murdered at the hands of Amanda Waller herself. Anyone and everyone were up for grabs and James Gunn did not hold back. Granted that’s what you can do when the studio gives you all the creative freedom you need. There’s so much blood and gore that you might have just forgotten who died and how. Don’t worry we got you covered! Another spoiler warning for those who have yet to watch “The Suicide Squad”.

Who Was Killed in The Suicide Squad?

Weasel

The Suicide Squad Weasel The Nerdy Basement

As Task Force X arrives on the beach of Corto Maltese, the team has to arrive at the beach undetected in order to make this happen they all have to jump into the ocean and swim to shore. Unfortunately for Task Force X, Weasel did not know how to swim. His hilarious death marked the first casualty of the film (if you aren’t counting the bird Savant killed earlier in the film). Despite Savant’s best efforts to save him, Weasel had bitten the dust.

Blackguard

Blackguard played by Pete Davidson had sold out The Suicide Squad and the team is ambushed by the Corto Maltese army. Chaos then ensues and a number of Task Force X members meet their demise. Blackguard literally gets his face blown off marking him the second death in this massive opening scene.

Mongal

Mongal tries to take down the Corto Maltese helicopter despite Flag’s warnings not to do so. As the helicopter comes crashing down, Mongal is burnt to a crisp. Mongal’s death causes a domino effect which ends up killing Captain Boomerang, critically injuring both T.D.K and Javelin. Both ultimately succumb to their wounds marking their death.

Savant spent most of his time on the shoreline spectating everyone’s death. Not wanting to meet his demise at the hands of the Corto Maltese he decides to abort his mission and try to swim away. Against Amanda Waller’s command, Savant does not return to the mission which results in Amanda Waller detonating the bomb implanted at the base of his skull.

After the deaths of the initial Task Force X team, we are introduced to Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Polka-Dot Man, Ratcatcher 2, and King Shark who form the new Suicide Squad team. This new team is tasked with infiltrating Corto Maltese to stop Project Starfish and also rescue Rick Flag and Harley Quinn. While The Suicide Squad continues to showcase its blood and gore, for the remainder of the film most of the members are kept alive that’s up until the third act of the film.

As The Suicide Squad uncovers the truth behind Project Starfish thanks to The Thinker, Rick Flag and Ratcatcher 2 both agree to reveal the truth to the press and the rest of the world. Unfortunately, for them, Peacemaker is Amanda Waller’s contingency plan. Peacemaker was secretly tasked with making sure that the truth behind Project Starfish never made it out of Corto Maltese. A fight ensues between Rick Flag and Peacemaker which ends with Peacemaker driving a piece of the sharp ceramic tile through Rick Flag’s heart.

John Cena’s Peacemaker is all about bringing peace to the world no matter how many men, women, and children he has to kill and no matter how many dicks he has to each off of the ground; even betraying his fellow Suicide Squad members. In a standoff with Bloodsport, who just arrived in time to stop Peacemaker from nearly killing Ratcatcher 2; he is shot in the neck. Bloodsport’s smaller bullet is able to penetrate Peacemaker’s bigger bullet and hits him in the jugular. Peacemaker falls to the ground as he bleeds out and is left for dead.

Polka-Dot Man

DAVID DASTMALCHIAN as Polka-Dot Man in Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action adventure “THE SUICIDE SQUAD,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

Polka-Dot Man was probably the last member of The Suicide Squad we were cheering for but we ultimately did. During their battle with Starro, Polka-Dot Man goes on the attack as he envisions Starro as his mother who he just so happened to kill. This aids him in killing anyone or anything because he has such a vendetta against her. Despite his best efforts, Polka-Dot Man bites the dust at the hands of Starro as Starro crushes him.

The Suicide Squad has its fair share of twists and turns which make it that much more engaging and enjoyable to watch. More twists and turns come after the film’s conclusion when we cut back to the Corto Maltese shore where Weasel died. Here we see that Weasel is not dead and is very much alive, he just needed some CPR and chest compressions to keep on going. Let’s just say he dodged a massive blue and pink, star-shaped bullet.

JOHN CENA as Peacemaker and KING SHARK in Warner Bros. Pictures’ superhero action adventure “THE SUICIDE SQUAD,” a Warner Bros. Pictures release.

The Suicide Squad’s post-credits scene reveals that Peacemaker is very much alive. Critically injured but very much alive. One of Amanda Waller’s subordinates reveals that Peacemaker was found in the rubble of Jotunheim, barely breathing, keeping himself alive by sheer will. Not only does this add to The Suicide Squad’s long list of twists and turns, but it perfectly sets up the upcoming Peacemaker HBO Max solo film.

The Suicide Squad is playing now in theaters and streaming exclusively on HBO Max.
