Andy Muschietti’s upcoming film The Flash is reportedly looking to recast Kiersey Clemons’ Iris West.
It’s been a long time coming for Ezra Miller’s The Flash solo film. The film itself has seen an overabundance of hurdles it has had to overcome. And while it seems to have temporarily overcome those hurdles, more hurdles have come it’s way more than how Eobard Thawne comes to thwart Barry Allen and ruin his life as The Flash.
A film that was originally set to release exactly two years ago. It has yet to see the light of day and has yet to make its big-screen debut. One of the biggest hurdles the film has had to overcome is the departure of its directors and screenwriters. The film currently sits in the hands of Andy Muschietti (IT, IT: Chapter 2), who according to The Illuminerdi, is looking to recast Iris West. A role that for the time being was filled and is still currently held by actress Kiersey Clemons.
Kiersey Clemons was set to make her debut as Iris West, Barry Allen’s love interest in Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Unfortunately for the actress, all of her scenes were cut from the film once The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron director, Joss Whedon took over the film to conduct reshoots and rewrites. Luckily for fans, an unfinished version of that deleted scene made its way online, sending fans of both The Flash and Iris West into a frenzy.
Why are they looking for a new actress to play Iris West, when they already have one?
Well, according to the casting call they are looking for an actress between the ages of 21-25 to play a 23-year-old Iris West. They describe this version of Iris West as smart, bold. A girl who always has a cellphone in hand. She’s an energetic, and perhaps over-caffeinated, tenacious cub reporter for the Central Citizen. The Central Citizen itself is also described as a modern 21st-century style newspaper.
One of the most interesting pieces of the casting call, although a bit odd. Is that they specifically want someone between the ages of 21-25. Kiersey Clemons is now 26, but will turn 27 towards to end of the year. It would be odd in my personal opinion that they would consider Kiersey “too old” for the role at this point. The casting call also has Iris West listed as a supporting character but still a bit odd of a reason to go far enough to recast the role entirely.
If this casting call is any indication of anything, it means that WB is clearly steering away from what many considered to be “Snyder’s Vision” of the DCEU. But if that is truly the case, shouldn’t we see a recast of the leading role, as opposed to recasting a supporting character who’s role is already filled for the time being? The casting call itself doesn’t really answer those questions and no one attached to the film has officially said anything as of yet.
The Flash’s theatrical release has recently been moved to June 3, 2022 due to the current pandemic. Just a tad over a month prior to its original release of July 2022.
