Ryan Reynold’s upcoming science fiction action comedy, Free Guy, is getting tons of buzz and praise. The film’s trailer was previewed earlier this month at CCXP in Brazil.
The film is directed by Shawn Levy, with a screenplay by Matt Lieberman and Zak Penn, based on a story by Lieberman. Joing Reynolds in the cast are Jodie Comer, Joe Keery, Lil Rel Howery, Utkarsh Ambudkar and Taika Waititi.
In an open world video game called Free City, Reynolds plays Guy, a a non-player character (NPC), working as a bank teller. Thanks to a code developed by programmers Milly (Comer) and Keys (Keery) inserted into Free City by the game’s publisher Antoine (Waititi), Guy becomes “aware” of his world being a video game. As a result, Guy takes it upon himself to play the hero, while racing against time to save the game before the developers decide to shut it down.
The movie is being described as Grand Theft Auto meets The Truman Show.
Free Guy was in development at 20th Century Fox prior to being acquired by Disney. The film is also one of the first Fox films to continue production under the new Disney ownership.
