RUMOR: SONY DEVELOPING A SPIDER-WOMAN SOLO FILM

Spider-Woman

Earlier today a new collaborative film between Marvel and Sony was announced to release in October of 2021. This drew up immediate speculation as to what this film could be. More precisely, speculation was that this would be the Kraven solo film that’s currently rumored to be in development. Adding more fuel to the fire that Kraven could appear in Spider-Man 2 which releases just a few months prior to this untitled film.

According to scooper Daniel Richtman, he has heard that Sony is developing a Spider-Woman solo film and that this newly announced release date could be when this Spider-Woman is released.

For those who are unaware, Marvel and Sony hold the shared rights to Jessica Drew aka Spider-Woman. While Marvel is allowed to use the character, they aren’t allowed to use her superhero moniker Spider-Woman. Nor are they allowed to use the Spider-Woman name or costume. Sony, on the other hand, is allowed to use Jessica Drew as many comic book readers know her as, and that’s Spider-Woman.

Sony Pictures has been really adamant about building and expanding their own cinematic universe of Spider-Man characters, which, according to Amy Pascal at one point in time, would be an adjunct of the MCU. Solidifying these claims is the upcoming Morbius solo film. Which will directly reference the events of Spider-Man: Far From Home, and we got our first glimpse of that in the film’s first official trailer.

Female-led comic book films have started being pushed to the forefront, a way that was paved with the success of Wonder Woman (2017), which was then followed up by Captain Marvel (2018). While Birds Of Prey (Harley Quinn: Birds Of Prey) hasn’t been performing well in the box office according to other outlets, it has been drawing in extremely positive reviews, and that’s prior to its recent title change.

So we can see why Sony Pictures might want to jump on that train and get the ball moving on their own female-led comic book film. As with every other Spider-Man related film released by Sony, the ultimate question(s) would be, is this connected to the MCU in any way? Will Tom Holland’s Spider-Man appear in the film?
