Fans who have been craving more Mad Max after Fury Road, we have great news! – Director George Romero has confirmed that a sequel is in the works!
According to Deadline, the Australian director shared some interesting news tidbits regarding his follow-up to his 2015 visual cinematic masterpiece, Mad Max: Fury Road.
Miller urged fans to be prepared for the upcoming sequel – one that he hopes to complete and release within the next decade!
The director also confirmed that he is presently in the middle of a movie titled Three Thousand Years of Longing. The film has actors Idris Elba and Tilda Swinton listed as attached. He joking declared the film was his “anti-‘Mad Max’ in terms of mood and visual style”.
While the film is set to go into production in early 2020, Miller wanted to reassure fans that he has not forgotten about his beloved Max. Miller’s very aware that the original Max trilogy is very dear to fans and is grateful that the franchise has reached a decades long, cult-status following. He has been planning the sequel while in production of his current project. In fact, the idea of working back and forth, on these projects simultaneously seems to invigorate the 74-year old visionary director creatively.
“It’s an interesting question, the idea of multi-tasking. I discuss this with other filmmakers and I think what happens to me is that when you’re working on one thing, and you get so distracted and focused on that one thing, it’s like a creative holiday to focus on the other one for a bit.”, he stated. “It helps you achieve that objectivity, to look at the thing afresh each time and say, ‘I thought I was doing this, but it doesn’t seem to be the case now.”
For those unaware, Fury Road spent over two decades in development hell before finally making it into the big screen. The film, starring Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron, a revisit to the franchise’s post-Apocalyptic sci-fi wasteland, was very well received, receiving both critical and financial acclaim due to its visual style, cinematography, and for its underlying themes of survival, home, vengeance, redemption, feminism and female empowerment centered around a male protagonist — which propelled it into becoming one of the biggest box office hits of the year!
While it may feel a bit daunting in the possibility of seeing a Mad Max sequel sometime in the next decade, at least there’s some comfort knowing that Miller we may give fans one after all ▪
