Disney is continuing its live-action remake trend. Next in line is a live-action/animated hybrid adaptation of Lilo & Stitch, and it is slated to arrive at Disney’s streaming service as a Disney+ Original Film. Reports about a live-action remake of Lilo & Stitch first surfaced back in 2018 and not much has been heard about the film up until now, thanks to The DisInsider who broke the news.
According to The DisInsider’s report, the film is set to start filming this Fall in Hawaii. While there are no current casting calls available to the public just yet, The DisInsider is reporting that the original voice actor for Stitch, Chris Sanders is expected to make a return and reprise his role as the voice of Stitch. Just like the most recent live-action/animated hybrid adaptation, The Lion King, Lilo & Stitch will closely follow the same story as the original animated film. While this should be expected, we should also expect some new creative choices for the film. Disney has made it a staple of theirs to change a few things when adapting their original animated films into live-action.
Synopsis:
The story is about the bond formed between a lonely human girl named Lilo and a dog-like alien named Stitch, who is engineered to be a force of destruction. Mike Van Waes (The Crooked Man) wrote the script for the remake that will be produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback, who are coming off last year’s billion-dollar hit remake of Aladdin and are also producing the Disney+ Inspector Gadget film. Studio execs Zoe Kent (Sade) and Louie Provost (Togo) will oversee the production. A search for a director is underway.
