After last week’s announcement, Spider-Man: Miles Morales has left fans with more questions than answers. Today, Insomniac Games looks to answer some of your questions.
Last week Playstation shocked the world with the official reveal and announcement of an all-new standalone game set in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, Spider-Man: Miles Morales. With a massive amount of support and feedback from fans all across the world, Insomniac Games and Playstation released a new trailer to explain some of the new gameplay and story details coming to the upcoming game, you can check out the trailer below.
“As we continued with the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe, we knew that Miles’s origin story as a Spider-Man was something that needed its own game. Miles’s multicultural background reflects a more modern, diverse world and we wanted to give players a new story, with new set-pieces, fresh villains, and unique quests across Marvel’s New York City. This had to be a can’t-miss next adventure in the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.” said Spider-Man: Miles Morales Creative Director Brian Horton.
Horton also went on to reveal that the game takes place nearly a year after the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man and what kind of obstacles Miles will be facing as he learns to become his very own Spider-Man.
“It’s now wintertime, about a year after the events of the first game. Marvel’s New York is covered in snow, and just before Christmas break, a war between an energy corporation and a high-tech criminal army has broken out. Miles’s new home in Harlem is at the heart of the battle.”
One of the biggest questions about the game was whether or not this was a massive expansion, DLC content or a direct sequel. Fans were left a bit confused when Sony’s Simon Rutter revealed that the game was an expansion rather than a standalone game. Reports were conflicting to say the least, with multiple outlets both confirming and denying Rutter’s initial statement. Insomniac themselves followed suit a short while after to reveal that Spider-Man: Mile Morales was indeed a standalone game and not in fact an expansion of Marvel’s Spider-Man.
“We know a lot of you want to know how big this game is. Our team at Insomniac has been working incredibly hard to bring you a fantastic Miles Morales adventure since we concluded development on Marvel’s Spider-Man. You’ll experience a full story arc with Miles, one that’s more akin to a game like Uncharted: The Lost Legacy in terms of overall scope. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales is an important, heartfelt, emotional and essential experience to expanding the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe. And we hope it will be for you as well.”
For those unfamiliar with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, it is set in the same universe as Uncharted and while not a sequel or prequel to Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End. The Lost Legacy instead presents a whole new story, which was pretty extensive to say the least and it stars one of the main characters you meet in Uncharted 4. You can expect exactly that from this Mile Morales game.
But as Horton mentions in the video above, this is just the tip of the iceberg. In today’s press release he also mentions that this specific Mile Morales story is critical to what’s to come next for the overall Spider-Man universe they are creating.
“It’s been amazing to be the creative director on Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, working with such an incredible team. I joined Insomniac near the end of Marvel’s Spider-Man, and being able to collaborate with our team and Marvel to create a new story and experience all around Miles Morales has been a career highlight. It’s been great to also work with Bryan Intihar, who directed the first game, as he continues to imagine big things for the Marvel’s Spider-Man universe.”
“Oh and one last thing: Many of you fans have wondered if Peter Parker is OK. Don’t worry, we still have much of Peter’s story left to tell. But this game is all about Miles, a critical part of our Spider-Man universe, and you won’t want to miss what happens.”
While a sequel to Marvel’s Spider-man has yet to be announced, we can presume that Horton is indeed teasing one and by the looks of it, Miles Morales’ story in this upcoming game will have a huge effect in what happens in the Spider-Man sequel, whenever we get it. For now, the light shines bright on Miles Morales and fans are beyond excited for the first ever Miles Morales centric video game.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales arrives on Playstation 5 when it launches this holiday season and with the massive power and innovation levels of the Playstation 5 and its new DualSense controller fans are in for a treat when they get their hands on the game.
“Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales will show off near-instant loading, ray-tracing, 3D audio, and the DualSense controller. We’ve upgraded our characters with 4D scans and improved skin shading for more realistic looking characters and spline-based hair that moves far more naturally. Many of the city’s assets have also been updated to take advantage of the new console. As you experience Miles’s story, you’ll see, hear, and feel things in a whole new way, all thanks to PS5.”
