According to a new report by We Got This Covered, Marvel Studios is producing a “What If” animated series for Disney’s upcoming streaming service. The animated series will be overseen by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige and company and will not be connected to MCU canon.
What is “What If”? What If is a one shot comic book series by Marvel Comics in where a story is written based on that same question, “What If”. The comic book series has accumulated nearly 200 one shot issues, thus far.
Now what do we know about this animated series other than it not being connected to the broader MCU? Well, not much has been revealed outside of that, other than the potential of some MCU stars reprising their roles on the animated series via voice acting and that the first episode of the series will reportedly be based on the What If one shot “What If Loki Found the Hammer of Thor?”
Ironically enough, Tom Hiddleston who plays Loki in the MCU, initially auditioned for the role of Thor before pleasing Marvel Studios enough to be given the role of the God of Mischief, Loki. (There’s an audition tape out there, go find it!) The stars just align sometimes and you suddenly get your neck snapped by Thanos, next thing you know, you have a solo series on Disney Plus and an animated series arrives with a pilot episode based on your character who just so happens to find and wield Mjolnir and becomes the God of Thunder. Talk about an inception!
All jokes aside, with Disney announcing a Loki solo series for Disney Plus and with reports of Tom Hiddleston reprising his role in that series via narration; and now with this report of MCU stars potentially reprising their roles via voice over for Marvel’s What If, the possibilities of spin-off scenarios based on the MCU are wildly intriguing!
What if Loki really DID find and wield Mjolnir in the MCU? What if Thunderbolt Ross really became Hulk, instead of Bruce Banner? This will all be interesting nonetheless.
