CITY AT WAR #1

Marvel Comics introduces a new comic book universe in Marvel’s Gamerverse. Kicking it off is the comic book adaption of the highly praised Insomniac Games: Spider-Man PS4 game.

Written by Dennis “Hopeless” Hallum, with art by Michele Bandini and colors by David Curiel. Spider-Man: City At War is a very, a very and I mean a very close adaptation to its source material. Almost in verbatim, in how close it is in adapting the storyline of Spider-Man PS4.

If you’ve experienced the universe that is introduced in Spider-Man PS4, this first issue is just a recap of what you already know. If you haven’t had the chance to personally experience the game, then this issue is perfect for getting you up to speed and getting to know the setting and story of the game.

It does a really good job at introducing Peter Parker, 8 years into his superhero gig as New York’s Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man. While also showing you the stress and anxiety that comes with being Peter Parker; and how much he has to juggle. Not only as Spider-Man, but as a scientist, a human being living his daily life and as a person who’s still dealing with the remnants of his relationship with now ex-girlfriend Mary Jane.

As I mentioned before, it’s mostly a retelling of the first act of the video game. But it shines by cutting out all the filler stuff you needed to do in the game to get from Point A to Point B. While also adding in some fun tidbits and new pieces of dialog to highlight that it is indeed a new story despite having source material already established.

CITY AT WAR #1

Michele Bandini’s art is crystal clear. She really shines by showing how good Spider-Man can look in action. Whether it’s swinging around in New York City or fighting off Kingpin and Mr. Negative’s Demons. David Curiel’s colors just add that extra layer of smooth comic book art as he compliments Michele’s art tremendously.

As someone who’s played Spider-Man PS4 and knowing what to expect going in. I still throughly enjoyed this first issue. I’m excited to see where it goes. If you’ve been hesitant about reading it because you’ve played the game, still give it a chance. If you haven’t played the game then definitely read this issue and immerse yourself in Marvel’s Gamerverse. The story is thrilling, compelling and emotional.
