Juggernaut #5 Review

It looks like Juggernaut is doing some good, even helping out the X-Men. Also, he is going to lead a superteam?

Cain Marko, otherwise known as Juggernaut is regarded as one of the X-Men’s greatest foes. He has left destruction in all of his battles. He has sided with Magneto. He is quite literally a threat to society. However, it seems like the supervillain has turned over a new leaf. Now working with his former enemies, he has been tasked with recusing a mutant named D-Cel.

Two days prior, Marko is communicating with Charles Xavier via hologram. He is given a message to retrieve the young mutant. He then has to send her to the Mutant Island-Nation of Krakoa. By the way, that is where all mutants are right now. The island is located in Tucumcari, New Mexico. However, the gateway to Krakoa is through a patrol, activated by a mutant named Tom.

With the pair being 25 miles away, they make their way to Krakoa. Yet, they first go to the Dungeon Max Penitentiary. They are attempting to free as many superhumans as possible. Juggernaut breaks in and nearly beats up one of the guards. After finding that the prisoners weren’t here, he sees a teleportation platform. Before going through it, he tells D-Cel that she is going to stay behind. She disagrees and Marko gets to work. He goes through a few armored guards.

He then stops when he encounters the warden of the facility. As the warden sends a swarm of genetically crafted stingers, Juggernaut laughs. However, he soon realizes that this is not a joke. The incests enter his helmet and continue to sting his head. This leaves him in a temporary state of paralysis. As the guards go-ahead to move Marko to the lab, they are attacked by D-Cel. She springs into action by hitting them with her kinetic energy.

Marko awakens and grabs D-Cel so that they can escape. Although they are out, the two soon realize that they crashed out of a helicarrier. They are in the air and try to figure out how to land safely. Marko then brings himself and D-Cel back inside. They are surrounded by the warden’s men. They even attempt to use D-Cel as a prisoner. Marko then steps in and tells them that she’s a mutant. By the United Nations Treaty, D-Cel cannot be facilitated in the area as she is a mutant. This is according to Juggernaut.

We then cut to a day before. Juggernaut and D-Cel are in a diner. Marko tells her that Krakoa is ready to take her in. Yet, she is happy about the idea, She doesn’t want to even be in that label. D-Cel reveals how she got her powers two years prior. She was driving with her parents, singing and having a good time. Out of nowhere, her powers manifested and it caused her father to crash into a truck. This killed her parents and left them hospitalized.

She never wanted to reveal the truth, to avoid how mutants were treated by society. We then jump back to the present day. The warden tries to her stay. After Marko convinces her to go to Krakoa, she decides to go there. She also reveals that she in fact is a mutant. Finally, she says her name is Miranda Manuel. The warden lets them go and they make it to their location.

Marko and D-Cel meet up with Charles Xavier, Tom Cassidy, and another mutant. She is welcomed with welcome arms and has an emotional goodbye with Marko. Marko said Miranda helped him in a lot of ways, she then thanks him for the same. Marko wants to be in Krakoa, but Cassidy explains that he can’t. This is because he is not a mutant. Marko also tells his old friend that she will run away. He wants them to actually keep an eye on her.

A week later, Armin Zola, Primus, and Marko work together to bring back Quicksand in North Dakota. After her return, a fight nearly breaks out between her and the scientist. Marko then explains why he brought her back. This is Marko’s idea as he wants to put together a team. He wants to help save the prisoners from the penitentiary.

Fabian Nicieza’s storytelling was decent. There was really anything eventful here. The only thing that really mattered was D-Cel’s origin story. Also, humanizing Juggernaut was pretty cool too. Yet, that is it for writing, it was decent. As for art, Ron Garney and Matt Milla did well with their illustrations. From Krakoa to Juggernaut’s design, even the display of D-Cel’s powers are fantastic. Those are just a few of the great shots from this issue.

Finally, it was a nice touch dedicating the issue to Mike Hobson. For those that do not know him, he was an executive president at Marvel. He aided in marketing, production, editorial, among many other jobs for the comic book company. He passed away in November 2020, aged 83. My condolences go out to his family and friends.
