Carnage: Black, White, and Blood #1 Review

Carnage has three different adventures in this issue! Let’s explore what this symbiote has been up to.

Carnage has been up to a lot. We see this in the Carnage: Black, White, and Blood issue here. In the comic, three stories show the scariest symbiote causing all types of havoc. The first story is “Love Story” by Tini Howard, with art done by Ken Lashley and Juan Fernandez. Then, “End of the Trail by Benjamin Percy and illustrated by Sara Pichelli and Mattia Iacono. Finally, we have “You Are Carnage” by Al Ewing. The art here was done sees Mattia Iacono pulling double duty, working alongside John McCrea.

In Love Story, Carriage is seen surviving post-apocalyptic world. He is seen talking with Cloak about a man named Lucius Marius. This person was surrounded by multiple dead bodies. It looks as if he survived a battle and was making his way through the city. Meanwhile, Carnage is getting all over Cloak. The symbiote adds that Marius is taking whatever he can get his hands on.

Spider-Man swings in and tells the pair that they have to stop the man. A delirious Marius finds a hooded woman with a baby. He takes it and it gifts him with the Carnage symbiote. Now with Carnage the duo work with the mysterious woman. It now looks as if Spider-Man, Cloak, Dagger, Iron Fist, and Captain America are fighting against Carnage and his team.

He is working with this woman and a few other villains. The Green Goblin, the Hobgoblin, and another sinister begin. This fight happens while zombies continue ruining the destroyed city. It looks as if Carnage and friends win. As it shows the faction taking the city as their own.

Next, we have End of the Trail. Earl Hanson a bounty hunter/vigilante riding through Colorado. He talks about a few other dangerous men. He talks about them because he killed them. His next target is a person responsible for setting a church ablaze. However, more trouble sparks as everyone on a train has been murdered. What Hanson doesn’t know is that he is tracking down Carnage. He is doing this literally and figuratively.

He prepares himself for this fight, as more blood is surrounding him. He shots in the dark twice, thinking that he got the symbiote. Yet, he shot a skeleton and knows that Carnage is tougher than that. As Hanson continues fighting, the monster wounds the protagonist. He then leaves the cave as he is now the new host for Carnage. He rides off on his red horse. It looks as if Carnage is going to have some more fun.

Finally, the third story, You Are Carnage. A general has tasked a random soldier with controlling Carnage. This is a bootleg Agent Venom. The man goes out with the monster swinging around the city. He sees a bank robbery taking place. Although he is trying to stop it, the cops want him away because of his past. Carnage finds the preparators, the Law of the Jungle. He fights them as he also insinuates that he is going to eat newborns. The fight continues as Carnage uses the giraffe to hit the pig.

The pig then blasts a cop head off. Carnage decapitates the pig, dunks the elephant’s head in a toilet, and rips the giraffe’s spine out. Carnage saves the day. However, this is far from a happy ending. The general is worried about the soldier’s mental health. With the soldier scared from what he witnessed. It is then revealed that the host actually died within Carnage. The issue ends with Carnage vowing to be America’s newest hero.

The issue was a really good read. Yet, it wasn’t perfect. There were times when I was left confused. Mainly for the first story, I thought that Carnage was supposed to be working with heroes. The ending made sense but getting there was a little weird. I found the second story the most interesting. It was the bloodiest story. I loved the twist of Hanson instead of hunting Carnage, he was hunted by the symbiote. Also, the literal and metaphorical idea of stopping Carnage.

The art enhanced all of the stories and what they stood for. The was a lot of blood and that is to be expected in a Carnage story. I loved this issue, mainly for the second story. I absolutely loved the final shot of that story. The cowboy and his horse are now consumed by Carnage. This was badass!!! This should excite readers for the next. Also, I enjoyed how we received three stories in one. It added more to the story of Carnage and their madness. We weren’t just left with the original Carnage, Cletus Kasady.
