Marvel Comics Heroes Reborn Weapon X Final Flight The Nerdy Basement

Heroes Reborn: Weapon X and Final Flight #1 (Review)

In the continuation of Heroes Reborn, we see two rival factions end their feud. However, a member of one of the teams is revealed to be a mole!!!

In this timeline, The Avengers do not exist. The Squadron Supreme of America is in their place. They are also a knockoff version of DC Comics’ The Justice League. They are tasked with taking down this version of Alpha Flight; Canada’s Avengers. Wolverine (now going by Weapon X), Shaman, Sasquatch, Aurora, and Claire Hudson. The team just wants to protect their country. Yet, it is not easy when they are on the World’s Most Wanted list. Also, it becomes even harder when one of Alpha Flight members turns on their own.

It was two years ago in Ontario, Canada where the teams first fought. Logan killed Hyperion with the help of the Shaman encasing his claws with magic. As the Squadron briefly mourns, The Flight continues their assault. Logan fights Nighthawk. Aurora fights her brother’s killer, Blur. Sasquatch even takes on Power Princess. Shaman then teleports his team out of the park.

Two years later, in Oshawa, Ontario a Nighthawk and a task force invade a mansion. Those inside are suspected of keeping The Flight out of the public eye. We then jump to the next night in Sudbury. The team and Professor Hudson have found a new hideout. As they discuss their next plan, Sasquatch’s alter ego, Walt and Logan get into it. The beast brings up how Logan only wants revenge for the killing of Jean Grey. The two nearly fight but are stopped by Aurora and Shaman.

While in bed, Aurora and Walt talk about Claire. Aurora believes she let Guardian and Vindicator down. The pair were founding members of the Flight and Claire’s parents. She then expresses how smart the 10-year-old is. They then talk about Shaman being distant after his daughter’s death. Then, they talk about Logan not knowing how to let go. Finally, she brings up how the Squadron killed her brother.

During that conversation, the professor is running a few tests on Logan. He even brings up that his healing factor should be working. They too talk about those they have lost. Some of the names of those who once served the group. The professor even tells Logan that he needs to put aside his plan for revenge. This talk makes Logan realize that he was wrong. The next morning, it is announced that Walt left. This is because he felt too bad that people were going to jail for the group. Logan does not care, knowing that it would happen. Logan even tells the group that they can follow Walt. Also, he shows that the professor helped him see.

Over a week later, The Flight invades a military base in Windsor, Nova Scotia. After tying up the guards, Logan questions the whereabouts of Nighthawk. He warns them when he is not answered. Back in Sudbury, Walt returns. He tells the team that they can free the prisoners. Everyone is on board for the rescue mission the next day.

Twenty-four hours later in Ottawa, The Flight is in position. However, they are greeted by the Squadron and a resurrected Hyperion. Teams fight once more. Just as Shaman is about to use magic, Sasquatch grabs him and takes him out. Aurora is giving the Blur hands but is knocked out by Nighthawk. Claire then loses to Power Princess and Logan loses to Hyperion.

After being BBQ’d by the Superman knockoff, Logan is brought to space by Dr. Spectrum. It is then revealed that Sasquatch planned Logan’s death to end the war. The Squadron leave and The Flight are not happy with Sasquatch. Claire attempts to shoot him as he explains why he did this. However, she stops herself and slaps him with the butt of her gun. Everyone is mourning the loss of their friend. As this goes down, Logan is dropped on the moon. This is to ensure that he never returns. Dr. Spectrum goes on a whole thing about how he should not survive. This concludes the story.

Ed Brisson’s writing in the story was awesome! I was getting Old Man Logan vibes, but he had a team with him. We also see how even one of the most powerful characters was in denial about his motives. Although it was Professor X, a professor still helped Logan. Also, the start and the end of the story were a crazy parallel. We started and ended with both team leaders. Yet, I wouldn’t be surprised if Logan somehow returned for some payback. Finally, Aurora talking about the losses was another great addition to the story. Overall, the read was great!

As for the art, Roland Boschi and Chris O’Halloran are really good at their job! Once again, details matter and the pair did not miss. From the fights to a couple of one-shots, it was a beautiful sight. Shaman first using his powers was lit! The final shot of Logan is tear-jerking. He has suffered some much and it no different in this timeline.
