In this issue of the Fantastic Four, Johnny Storm is hot water with his new flame. Also, Dr. Doom is getting married!!!
The Fantastic Four are known by many as Marvel’s first family. Reed Richards, Sue Storm, Johnny Storm, and Ben Grimm gained their abilities in a space accident. They then decided to use their powers for good. Over the years, Reed and Sue married and had children, they fought with Dr. Doom for a while, and have been a part of many big events in Marvel’s history. This issue will look at Johnny Storm aka The Human Torch’s date. Sadly for him, it does not end well.
Johnny is getting ready for his double date. He and his girlfriend, Sky are going out with The Thing, Alicia, and their Kree/Skrull kids. He is speaking with Crystal about the date at the Baxter Building. As the two talk, Crystal’s daughter, Luna interrupts. She uses her powers to accurately depict the outcome of Johnny’s date. This understandably worries him as she hangs up. By the way, Luna is also the daughter of Pietro Maximoff aka Quicksilver.
The couples arrive at the Latveria building with fans protesting Doom’s exit. They are then greeted by Victorious. As she speaks, the kids talk about how they hate her. Johnny even cracks a joke and this makes Victorious mad. Sky pulls him aside and tells him to chill. Yet, this fun moment is about to go south. Another Sky walks in thinking that Alicia gave her the wrong date for date. It is then revealed that Johnny’s ex-wife, Lyja was masquerading as her. Ben and the kids are about to fight her. Yet, they are stopped by Alicia. The Grimm family ends up leaving the party early.
All of a sudden, armored beings show up to ruin the Latverian celebration more. The Human Torch, Sky, Lyja, and Victorious work together to fight them off. There is some banter between the fight. Johnny is proving to his ex that he is a hero. Lyja then comments on Sky and she blasts her. Johnny catches Lyja and this enrages Sky even further.
Victorious is also mad because of the love triangle. The government then show up to kick Victorious out of Earth. As this is going on, Sky leaves Johnny when he offers to talk with her. Lyja then tries to talk with Johnny. He gives her the cold shoulder and she leaves. However, she is once again impersonating Alicia. Ben even checks up on her.
We then get a panel where it looks like the lovebirds are talking. Yet, it shows that Johnny had a one-night stand with Victorious, and Sky slept alone. As they talk, she gets a message from Dr. Doom. She expresses her disappointment about what happened. Doom is not angry in the slightest and asked for her hand in marriage.
We then get a mini-story of Reed trying to become friends with Doom in college. He declines his chess offer and we are brought to the present. The pair face of in a duel, similar to chess. Reed wins, but Doom drops him. In the end, Doom reveals that Reed is his best man for his wedding.
Dan Slott did a fantastic job with this issue. It was entertaining and showed a more sympathetic side for Johnny. The love triangle is a very interesting arc for him. This story showed that the past can haunt you. Also, the past can mess up your present and even future. This was a great read! The same goes for the small story. Reed saying the space in chess was cool. A tale we never asked for, but do not deserve. Finally, there is proof that the pair respect each other.
As for the art, three people did very well with the illustrations. R.B. Silva, Javier Rodríguez, and Jesus Aburtov also stood out. From the work on the Victorious and other characters to the fights, they did well. The detail on Sky’s wings was outstanding! It was awesome to look at from start to finish.
