This issue is truly a masterful piece of literature written by Jason Aaron with breathtaking art by Mike Del Mundo. It contrasts the age old adage are we parenting better than our parents? As a father myself I constantly wonder am I doing a good job? Am I telling my kids I love them enough, am I playing with them enough, am I preparing them for their future? This issue tackles all those issues from the perspective of Odin and you will not be disappointed. Grab the tissues because this issue will have you shedding some tears.

The All-Father Odin is trying his damnedest to prepare for “The War of the Realms” but he knows the only hope the realms have lies in his son Thor. As he plans his next move he also thinks back to the things he’s never said, the things he’s never done. He thinks back to the Father he’s never been to Thor. Odin has found that while he’s been a great Warrior, Conqueror and Drunk he’s been a terrible Father…probably has a lot to do with the Drunk part.

The thing I love most about the issue is Odin’s inner monologue which starts once Thor appears on Asgard looking for more hammers. Odin thinks back to when Thor was a child and how the moniker “God of Thunder” came to be, it wasn’t a badge of honor, it was Odin’s way of mocking his son because he was terrified of storms. We come to under stand at a deeper level that maybe the reason Thor feels so Unworthy is because his father made him feel that way his whole life.

While Odin and Thor are having a conversation Odin is inwardly having an emotional struggle with himself on how to fix things with Thor. We learn that as bad as Odin is he is doing a far better job than that of his own father Bor. In the end we find that Odin’s pride wins out and a battle ensues. Thor, finally snapping, lets Odin have it telling him of his failures as an All-Father all the while they are beating the Hel out of each other.

Thor, finally stopped by his brother Balder “The Brave”, fiercely won this battle leaving Odin laying bloody, defeated, Odin’s only thoughts “LET ME BE REMEMBERED SIMPLY AS FATHER OF THE GREATEST GOD WHO EVER LIVED.” ……
